What is royal icing used for?

Unlike buttercream frosting, royal icing dries and sets hard which makes it ideal for icing cookies, gingerbread houses, wedding cakes and more. It is useful for adding those small decorative touches.

How long does royal icing last after being made?

Using fresh icing is always the best option! However, royal icing can last for approximately three days to a week after being made.

Does royal icing harden?

As royal icing dries it hardens to the consistency of a sugary coating. It can take up to 6 to 8 hours at room temperature to dry fully.

Can I put royal icing directly on a cake?

For best results on a cake, cover the cake with fondant before applying royal icing. The covering will seal the moisture in the cake and prevent it from going dry. It will also provide a sturdy and smooth base layer for the royal icing.

Can I freeze royal icing?

Royal icing can last in your freezer for approximately one to two months, however, make sure the royal icing is in a zip up freezer bag or in an airtight container for it to preserve.
